Healthy Donut Recipe
HEALTHY DONUTS. You heard that right. Wholesome, delicious, feel-good donuts.
Why do I like to make healthy recipes?
Not because they’re lower in calories, not because I don’t eat sugar every now and then but because I enjoy these recipes for breakfast or as an afternoon snack quite often.
So I'm much happier knowing that they have benefits rather than make me feel like I'm on a sugar roller coaster all day.
I’m a huge dessert person, I love muffins, cookies, cakes, and if I want to enjoy them daily, I won’t be as happy if they contain refined sugar, hydrogenated fats, artificial ingredients and zero benefits.
On the long-term these unhealthy ingredients take a toll, so I absolutely love making healthier alternatives at home.
Why do I prefer to bake without sugar?
- Because sugar makes you crave more sugar
- It causes sugar crashes throughout the day, makes you tired
- You only enjoy it so temporarily until you want another source of sugar
Did you know that Donuts are usually fried?
Donuts are deep-fried and are made with white flour, sugar, shortening, flavorings etc. Whereas the healthy donuts recipe I'm sharing with you today is baked in the oven, made with whole-grain, rich and nutritious ingredients.
You can watch this video to see how donuts are usually made.
Without further ado, I'm excited to share this recipe with you.
Healthy Donuts Recipe
Makes: 12 Baked Healthy Donuts
- 1 ½ cup whole wheat flour
- ¼ teaspoon rock salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons raw cocoa
- 1 ripe banana
- ½ cup milk plant based or cows milk
- 1 whole egg
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil melted and cooled
- 4 tablespoons honey
- ½ cup Greek yogurt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chocolate glaze from raw coca
- 4 tablespoons coconut oil melted and cooled
- 4 tablespoons raw cocoa
- 2 tablespoons honey
Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease donut pan.
In a large bowl mix together dry ingredients - flour, salt, baking powder, soda, cinnamon and raw cocoa.
In blender mix banana with milk.
Melt the coconut oil in a separate bowl (let it cool for a minute), add the egg, honey, Greek yogurt and vanilla extract. Add the banana mix. Stir well in a bowl or in the blender.
Add dry ingredients into wet mixture. Mix well.
Fill donut pan with the mixture using a icing kit or simple plastic bag. I used a ziploc bag and made a small cut at the side of it. Make sure you don't overfill.
Bake for 14-17 minutes and then allow donuts to cool for 5 minutes.
Tip donuts out and dip into a chocolate glaze. Sprinkle with raw cocoa beans or chia seeds, I enjoyed them as is :)
Melt and cool a bit coconut oil. Add raw cocoa and honey and mix well with a whisk. Add more cocoa if glaze is too thin.
- They're best enjoyed same day to the next day.
- Keep in airtight container up to 2 days.
